How to Convert Mixed Numbers and Fractions

Mixed → Improper: Multiply the whole number by the denominator, add the numerator. Keep the same denominator.

Example: 1¾ → (1 × 4) + 3 = 7 → result: 7/4

Improper → Mixed: Divide numerator by denominator. The quotient is the whole part; the remainder is the new numerator.

Example: 7/4 → 7 ÷ 4 = 1 remainder 3 → result: 1 and 3/4

Before converting, make sure the fraction is in lowest terms — use the fraction simplifier first. To then add or subtract the result, try the fraction calculator.
