What are Equivalent Fractions?

Equivalent fractions represent the same value but are written differently. You create them by multiplying (or dividing) both the numerator and the denominator by the same non-zero number.

Example: 1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6 = 4/8 = 5/10 — all equal 0.5

The simplified form (where GCD = 1) is called the lowest terms or simplest form. Use our fraction comparison tool to verify that two fractions are truly equivalent.
